Aftermath
The day after: which vote changes looked unusual, which races are still uncalled, still counting or still waiting for their first results, and which states have no automated results feed. Updates live as counting continues.
Suss Vote Changes
48Stretches of the count that broke sharply from the race's own recent pattern, graded by how unlikely they would be by chance, and vote totals that went down after a race's first hour. Unusual is not wrong: the usual cause is a large county or a block of mail ballots reporting at once, or a correction. Pick a level to show only those races.
How we flag these
- Each batch of new votes is compared with the race's previous six batches. The gap is measured against how much that race's batches normally vary, and turned into the chance of a gap at least that large if the count were behaving as before.
- Level 4 means a chance below 1 in a million. It is a strict bar: across the whole election, there is at most a 5% chance of even one Level 4 flag appearing by chance alone. Level 3 is below 1 in 100,000, Level 2 below 1 in 10,000 and Level 1 below 1 in 1,000. Lower levels catch more, and more of them are noise: each level above says roughly how many.
- Not checked: the first hour after a race's first results (offices are still settling in), stretches when our own collector was failing, results entered by hand, and the jump when a race's data source changes.
- Count went down: a candidate's total fell by at least 100 votes (and 0.1%) after the race's first hour.
